Nelson Mandela became a rallying point for South Africa’s oppressed, and the world’s most famous political prisoner. In 1993, Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, jointly with Frederik Willem de Klerk, for his work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa.
